A free Cursor alternative
VibeFree is a free alternative to Cursor: AI-assisted editing, codebase search, and terminal access inside your editor - compared to Cursor Pro's $20/month. VibeFree costs nothing, funded by ads instead of a subscription, and installs as an extension rather than requiring you to switch editors.
- Installs into the VS Code you already have. Cursor is a fork, so adopting it means moving editor: re-installing extensions, re-checking keybindings, re-learning small things. VibeFree is an extension, so none of that happens.
- An agent, not autocomplete. Cursor's Tab model is its signature feature, and VibeFree has no equivalent - the chat panel is the whole product.
- Reads, creates and edits files across your project, with inline diffs in the chat panel, and greps and globs the codebase before it edits.
- Runs shell commands and manages long-running background tasks.
- Connects to any MCP server you have configured locally.
Moving from Cursor
The move is back to stock VS Code plus one extension, so your extensions, themes, settings and keybindings are whatever they were before you switched editors. What does not come with you is anything Cursor built into the editor itself rather than into a panel - Tab completion above all, and the editor-level UI around applying and reviewing a change.
What VibeFree does not do
- No Tab completion. Cursor’s multi-line, multi-cursor Tab is the feature people stay for, and there is nothing like it here.
- No repository-wide semantic index. VibeFree finds code by grep and glob on demand, not by embedding your codebase ahead of time.
- No choice of frontier model, no BYO API key, and no usage-based tier to buy more of.
- Ads. A short sponsored card appears in the chat panel, in place of the $20 a month.

Prices above are each vendor's own published price for their lowest individual paid tier, checked directly against their pricing pages on 27 August 2026. Most of them also have a free tier, and the column says so - what it does not give is the current cap, because vendors retune those far more often than they change a price. Verify both directly with each vendor before deciding. Every comparison page covers the rest of the market.
Frequently asked questions
Is VibeFree really free compared to Cursor?
Yes. Cursor's individual Pro plan costs $20/month; VibeFree has no paid tier at all - it's funded by ads instead of a subscription.
Do I have to switch editors to use VibeFree instead of Cursor?
No. Cursor is a separate editor built as a fork of VS Code, so switching to it means leaving your current editor. VibeFree is an extension that installs directly into the VS Code you already use.
Can I keep my current VS Code extensions and settings if I use VibeFree?
Yes - since VibeFree is a regular VS Code extension rather than a separate editor, your existing extensions, themes, and settings are unaffected.
