What is vibe coding?

Vibe coding is describing what you want in plain English and letting an AI agent write, edit, and debug the code for you inside your editor, instead of writing every line by hand yourself.

You describe a feature, bug, or change in natural language; the agent finds the relevant code, edits it, and explains what changed.
The agent reads and edits files across your project, runs shell commands, and can connect to any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to call external tools.
It asks a multiple-choice question when it needs a decision, instead of guessing.

What actually happens in a turn

The phrase makes it sound like the agent guesses. It does not - it works, and the work is visible. A typical turn on a real codebase looks like this:

It searches before it writes. Greps and globs the project to find where the thing you named actually lives, rather than inventing a file path.
It reads the surrounding code, so the edit matches the conventions already there instead of the conventions the model likes.
It edits, and shows you the diff inline in the chat panel as it goes - added and removed lines, in the file it changed.
It runs something to check itself. A test, a build, a type-check. When that fails it reads the failure and tries again, which is the part that separates an agent from a code generator.
It asks when it genuinely does not know, as a multiple-choice question rather than a guess it commits to.

Where vibe coding goes wrong

Worth knowing before you lean on it. An agent is confident in proportion to how much context it has, not to how right it is: on a large unfamiliar codebase it will occasionally edit the wrong one of two similarly-named things, or solve the symptom you described rather than the cause you did not. It is also poor at deciding that a change is a bad idea - it will build what you asked for. The defence is the same as with any contributor: read the diff, keep turns small, and make sure something runs the tests.
