A no-subscription LLM for chat and code

Every LLM you can use is paid for somehow. There are five ways that happens, and only one of them leaves nothing for you to cancel. This page is about the funding models rather than about VibeFree specifically - if what you want is the plain answer to whether VibeFree costs anything, that is is VibeFree really free?.

The five ways an LLM gets paid for

ModelWhat you commit toWhat runs out
SubscriptionA monthly or annual charge, usually $10-$20 for an individual planNothing, until you stop paying - then everything
CreditsA subscription that also meters requests against an allowanceThe allowance, mid-month, at which point you buy more
Metered APIA card on file and a per-token priceNothing, but the bill is unbounded and arrives afterwards
Free tierNothing, until the capMessages, model quality, or both - by design, to move you to the paid tier
Ad-fundedNothing. An advertiser pays for the turn insteadAdvertiser inventory - at which point a free house model takes over

VibeFree is the last row. That is not a better deal in every direction, and the rest of this page is about where it is and is not.

Why "no subscription" is not the same as "free tier"

A free tier is the shallow end of a paid product. Its limits are not chosen by what the vendor can afford to give away; they are chosen by how quickly they want you to upgrade, which is why they tend to tighten. Ad funding has no such incentive, because there is nothing to upgrade to. What it has instead is a different failure mode: when no advertiser will pay for a turn, the money genuinely is not there, and you move to a smaller house model on a free daily token allowance rather than to a paywall. You are told on screen when that happens.

What you actually give up

  • A frontier model. Subscriptions buy access to the best models their vendors have. VibeFree runs DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and gpt-oss-20b - capable, and not that.
  • A quiet screen. A short sponsored card appears on the loading screen and beside replies. It is never inside the answer, which no bid can influence.
  • A decision to make. External ad networks are opt-in, and consenting means the conversation is sent to them. Refusing costs no feature and no model - see the Cookie Policy for exactly what each network receives.

No subscription, on every surface

The funding model is the same wherever you use it: the web chat, the VS Code extension with the same two models in its own picker, and VibeDesign. One account, no card at any point, and nothing that behaves differently because you have not paid. How VibeFree stays ad-funded explains the order the money arrives in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the catch with an ad-funded LLM?

Three things, stated plainly. The models are not frontier models - DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and gpt-oss-20b. A sponsored card appears on the loading screen and beside replies, though never inside the answer itself. And you are asked once whether external ad networks may be used, which means sending them the conversation; refusing that costs you no feature and no model.

What happens when the advertisers run out?

You move to the gpt-oss-20b model and a free daily token allowance, and you are told on screen that it happened and why. That is the floor rather than a paywall - there is nothing to buy at that point, and you can switch back whenever inventory returns.

Is this cheaper than paying per token through an API?

It is free rather than cheap, which is a different thing. A metered API has no subscription either, but it has a card on file and a bill that arrives afterwards in proportion to how much you used. VibeFree has neither, and no usage number that turns into money.

Can I use a no-subscription LLM for coding, not just chat?

Yes. The VS Code extension brings the same two models and the same funding to your editor, for reading, editing, and debugging code across a project.
