A free Claude Code alternative for VS Code

Moving from Claude Code
These are different shapes of tool, and the move is worth thinking about as one. Claude Code is a terminal-first agent you point at a repository; VibeFree is a panel you talk to beside the file you are looking at. If your workflow is a terminal in one pane and an editor in the other, the panel will feel like a constraint. If you mostly wanted the agent without the subscription, it will not.
What VibeFree does not do
- No CLI and no headless mode. There is nothing to run in a terminal, a CI job or a script.
- No subagents, no hooks, no custom slash commands, and no project-level instruction file.
- A smaller model behind it, and no choice of a frontier one.
- Ads. A short sponsored card appears in the chat panel, in place of the Claude subscription.
One shared usage pool, not a separate tool: Claude Code is primarily a terminal-based agent, and its usage draws from the same allowance as your other Claude usage - chat and Claude Design included - rather than a separate quota. VibeFree is a native VS Code extension with unlimited use, and nothing to share.

Most of them also have a free tier, and the column says so - what it does not give is the current cap, because vendors retune those far more often than they change a price.
